Yes, it’s against the law to show the movie outside of your own home without a license.
The Law: The Federal Copyright Act (Title 17 of the U.S. Code) requires a public performance license for showing movies outside of your home even if admission is free. Even if you buy a dvd/BluRay, that purchase does NOT allow for use for public showings.
As “Home Use Only” is not a defense: Buying a physical copy (DVD, Blu-Ray) or having a personal streaming subscription (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+) only grants the right to watch the movie in your own home. It does not cover public screenings.
In addition, Downloading the movie, or “ripping” it from the internet to stream or project it in any way is illegal.
An individual School can license the movie for a year depending on the number of students. but most prefer School District Master License to cover all Schools.

- Large Schools with high enrollment starts at $2,000+ per school (MSRP)

Public means Public: Showing a movie outside of a private home setting—even to a small audience, for free, or for a school/charity event—is legally considered a “public performance” and requires a license.
The license fee does not include the cost of the actual DVD/Blu-Ray or streaming service.
Showing a movie without the proper public performance license violates federal copyright law and can result in severe civil fines up to $250,000.00 and potential criminal charges, including up to five years in prison.
